Dunga Oil Field is situated in a steppe plain part of South Mangyshlak in the immediate vicinity of Caspian Sea offshore area, in 50km to the North-West of Aktau and is a part of Tupkaragansky district of Mangystau oblast from administrative point of view. Oil trunk pipeline Uzen-Atyrau-Samara passes through in 50 km of the field.
The deposit structure is identified by regional seismic investigations in 1953 and elaborated in 1965. The wildcat drilling was started in 1966. The field was discovered in 1969.
According to geologic exploration data, the deposits amount 55,795 million tones of oil and 3,487 billion m3 of dissolved gas.
